On Thursday, March 19th 2015, Pierre Bergé & Associés will organize an exceptional sale of around 1,500 historical as well as contemporary photographs. This collection was gathered by a couple of art collectors over several decades as from the 1970s and counts works by more than 140 different photographers from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection covers a timeframe of 175 years, its earliest piece dating back to 1837, two years before what we consider being the moment when photography was invented.

This particular piece is a portrait by Jacques-Louis-Mandé Daguerre, M. Huet 1837 (below), considered to be the first photographic portrait in the world, two years before Daguerre would reveal his method of photography. The portrait, which has remained intact, is estimated between 600,00 and 800,000 euros.

This collection is the largest private collection ever been put to auction in the last ten years in Europe. It counts 95 photographs from 19th-century artists like Gustave Le Gray, Charles Nègre, Auguste Salzmann or Camille Silvy, as well as numerous works by 43 prestigious names in photography, such as Brancusi, Man Ray, Sherill Schell, or George Hoyningen-Huene. The auction sale will be preceded by an exhibition organized on March 17th and 18th at Drouot, 9 Rue Drouot in Paris 9th arrondissement, and will be the occasion for the public to discover these rare photographies that for the most part cannot be found in anthologies.

The exceptional auction sale will take place on March 19th (14.00pm) at Drouot Richelieu, 9 Rue Drouot 75009 Paris, and will be preceded by a public exhibition.
