ROLEX MENTOR & PROTÉGÉ: JOAN JONAS IS ONE OF THE NEW MENTORS

By Crash redaction

JOAN JONAS TAKES ON THE ROLE OF MENTOR FOR VISUAL ARTS

A major figure of American avant-garde, Joan Jonas has made an impact in the 1960 in the contemporary art scene with her innovative installations, performances, and videos. For over fifty years, she has been researching through her work the notion of narration, language, and imaginary. Jonas represented the United States at the 2015 Venice Biennial, and, among many solo and group exhibitions in majors galleries over the years, she has notably been part of five editions of Kassel’s documenta. For the Rolex Mentor & Protégé mentorship programme, she joins six other internationally respected artists who take on the role of mentor in their respective fields of expertise, Jonas’ being the visual arts. This year’s selected mentors are David Chipperfiled (architecture), Robert Lepage (theater), Alfonso Cuarón (cinema), Ohad Naharin (dance), Mia Couto (literature), and Philip Glass (music). Joan Jonas and the other mentors will have the task to guide, in a year time, a promising artist (the « protégé ») and eventually create a piece of work together. As from June 2016, the mentors will initiate a collaboration with a young artist selected from a handful of finalists in each artistic field. Their names will be revealed at the same time. Since its creation in 2002, the Rolex Mentor & Protégé mentorship programme has welcomed as mentors the greatest names in all artistic disciplines and has championed new talents from all over the world, respecting its main goal: to make sure that our artistic heritages lives on over the generations.
