GUCCI AND ARI MARCOPOULOS PRESENT ‘DAPPER DAN’S HARLEM’

By Alice Butterlin

Gucci has just announced it is releasing the picture book Dapper Dan’s Harlem with photos by Ari Marcopoulos today with a cocktail event at the Florence Gucci Garden on the occasion of the Pitti Uomo 95 fair. This limited edition book follows Marcopoulos’ adventures in the New York neighborhood of Harlem, where lived Dapper Dan, the famous designer who blended haute couture with hip-hop. His photographs live next to images of Trevor Andrews, the artist, poet and author Cleo Wade, the chef Marcus Samuelsson and the businessman and author Steve Stoute. This marks Ari Marcopoulos’ second book for Gucci, after Epiphany, a series of photos documenting the house’s pre-fall 2016 collection in a Milan palazzo.

Gucci first collaborated with the iconic designer of 1980s Harlem after the cruise 2018 collection where Alessandro Michele sent a look very reminiscent of Dapper Dan down the runway. Michele then took it to the next level by launching the Gucci-Dapper Dan collection last July, complete with sweatsuits, jackets, sneakers, backpacks and cross-body bags.
