HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR AT CHANEL S/S 2021

By Crash

The grandiose Spring/Summer 2020 Chanel show was, of course, held at the Grand Palais where Virginie Viard revealed the house’s name in huge letters, harkening back to the legendary Hollywood sign. A nod that this collection would be strongly inspired by the movies that have shaped us and the actresses which made us dream. Does that mean the clothes were geared only towards red carpet events? Not necessarily, as chic evening gowns flowed next to much more street-savvy ensembles.

Chanel has always has a special relationship with actresses from around the world, dressing them for events, movies or everyday life. Not only an outfit but a companion, the Chanel girls are very different but share the same timeless elegance. Grace Kelly, Jeanne Moreau, Anna Karina but also more recently Anna Mouglalis, Lily-Rose Depp or Kirsten Stewart all carry the Chanel legacy with grace. As notable movie moments in Gabrielle Chanel’s costume career, Last Year at Marienbad comes to mind with a striking Delphine Seyrig in beautiful evening dresses.

So as the models walked yesterday in Paris, old movie stars and new Netflix personalities mixed, conveying the past and the present in a wonderful marriage. Big-shoulder jackets were paired with mini-skirts and sheer tights, while mini dresses and shirts were adorned with an acid fluoro graffiti pattern. Chic but with an edge. Tweed sets were, of course, still in the game, with a black and beige opening the show with a large slit on the thigh, worn over a pink top.
