JEAN PAUL GAULTIER X MYTHERESA

By Roisin Breen

In 2020, Jean Paul Gaultier passed on the reins from his iconic, historic and pioneering house to a new creative director, Florence Tétier. She has since taken over the “massive creative and collaborative hive” honing in on the values held so dear in the heart of the house and Gaultier himself, inclusiveness, irreverence, humor and above all, liberty.

Under the helm of Tétier, the house of Gaultier has collaborated on an exclusive capsule collection with the luxury online retail giant, Mytheresa. What started out as a small boutique in 1987, the early-adopter was one of the first luxury stores to move into the world of online retailing, and is now synonymous with multiple emblematic collaborations, events and partnerships, ranging from ready-to-wear, accessories, menswear, kidswear and even homewear.

True to the house’s impressive heritage, the twenty-piece capsule features ready-to-wear and accessories reinterpreting iconic Gaultier silhouettes. Elevating key styles from the house’s archives the collection is all about sequins, rhinestones and transparent illusions. Denim pieces are reminiscent of the Gaultier 2013 ‘Look Alike’ now legendary collection. The embroidered mariniere, the transparent shirt dress and the tattoo print borrowed from the archives transports the wearer instantly back to 1990 and ‘Les Rappieuses’ collection. There is also a range of exaggeratedly oversized jewelry pieces with intertwined JPG letters in rhinestones to accessorize any look accordingly.

The collection launches globally on Mytheresa today, December 7th, accompanied by a dedicated editorial story directed by Mytheresa Chief Creative Officer Julian Paul, photographed by Kenny Germé and featuring model of the moment, Dorothy Cheng.
