A REVIEW OF ASVOFF FASHION FILM APERITIVO

HOLI HOLY – A MANISH ARORA FILM by Bharat Sikka [Winner of the THE 6TH ASVOFF GRAND PRICE, Best Sound, Best Emerging Talent)

For some time now, ASVOFF has aimed to promote short films produced by fashion professionals, whether it be fashion houses, photographers, creative directors or professionals from other artistic disciplines. Created by Diane Pernet in 2008, A Shaded View On Fashion has quickly become one of the world’s most influential fashion film festivals and will organise its seventh edition and film competition from November 21st to 23rd 2014 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

For the second year, A Shaded View On Fashion Film has succeeded in offering an alternative to the events surrounding the Cannes Film Festival by organising a “Fashion Film Aperitivo” at the Silencio club in Cannes with the help of French swimwear brand Vilebrequin. Bertrand Burgalat, who is responsible for the music of Vilebrequin’s newest campaign, was invited as the special guest to perform live during the night. This year’s event was not only a good way to have fun but also the occasion to contemplate the importance of fashion films today, particularly with the emergence of new media that has taken the fashion world by storm. The “fashion film” – a hybrid medium between pure artistic expression and promotion of one’s vision – has grown to become a genre in itself, aside others disciplines like fashion photography, video-clips and so on. More than just a video, the fashion film replaces fashion in the centre of artistic expression.

Once more, ASVOFF has selected numerous quality fashion films by directors and photographers such as Ellen Von Unwerth, Stuart Blumberg, Bryan Adams or Erwin Olaf. Guest of honour of the event, French director and actor Julien Landais attended the “Fashion Film Aperitivo” and represented the young generation that he likes to illustrate in his films such as Der Doppelgänger with Alain Fabien Delon or Masque d’Or with Marie de Villepin.
