RUINART X FRIEZE NY ‘MAISON 1729’

By Crash redaction

During Frieze New York, the House of Ruinart presented Maison 1729, a retrospective exhibition with artists David Shrigley, Liu Bolin, Vik Muniz, Georgia Russell and Tomás Saraceno, and a residency by New York based artist Sophie Kitching. The gallery space, Studio 525 located on 24th Street in Chelsea, was reimagined to reflect Ruinart’s devotion to sustainability and the arts.

Ruinart invited Sophie Kitching to showcase her work and create a suite of unique Second Skin Magnum cases. Adorned with Japanese watercolor, crayons and gold leaf accents, the Limited Edition of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Champagne Rosé Magnums echoes the artist’s paintings and installations also presented as part of Maison 1729. In collaboration with Ruinart, Sophie Kitching also created a series of Second Skin coasters, through the upcycling of the eco-responsible cases that wrap the Champagne bottles. Envisioned to encourage the collection and recycling of Second Skin cases, the artist transformed the light paper cover made from natural wood fibers into unique multiple hand-crafted coasters using gold leaf and moongold, watercolor and crayons. Cut into disks, immersed in water, and flattened to size, the coasters became miniature circular paintings for visitors to take home.

Sophie Kitching previously exhibited at 22 Visconti, the Saint-Germain-des-Près gallery run by Crash’s own Armelle Leturcq and Frank Perrin, as part of the Surfaces sans cibles exhibition in 2017.
