By Crash redaction

At the 59th International Art Exhibition at La Biennale de Venezia, the Golden Lion for Best National Participation was awarded to Great Britain. Artist Sonia Boyce’s installation Feeling Her Way, combines video, collage, sculpture and music. Boyce invited five black female musicians (Poppy Ajudha, Jacqui Dankworth, Sofia Jernberg, Tanita Tikaram, and composer Errollyn Wallen) to improvise together in the same studio where the Beatles recorded Abbey Road. The videos of the musicians improvising and playing with their voices are surrounded by the signature patterned wallpaper and gold geometric sculptures of Boyce.  The jury said of the installation, « Sonia Boyce proposes, consequently, another reading of histories through the sonic. In working collaboratively with other black women, she unpacks a plenitude of silenced stories. » Boyce is the fist black woman to represent Great Britain at the Biennale and it is her second time exhibiting a the event.

The Exhibition is open to the public until the 27th of April. Discover Crash’s photos of the UK Pavilion below.
