THE WORLD THROUGH AI, THE NEW EXHIBITION AT LE JEU DE PAUME

By Amandine Richard

From 11th April to 21st of September, this exhibition explore close links between Artificial Intelligence and contemporary art. Specifically designed for the Jeu de Paume’s gallery, this exhibition reflects the fundamental distinction between analytical and generative AI. Le monde selon l’IA (The world through AI) unveils works by French and international artists such as Julian Charrière, Grégory Chatonsky, Agnieszka Kurant, Christian Marclay, Trevor Paglen, Hito Steyerl and Sasha Stiles, who all question the way these technologies are overturning creative processes while redefining the boundaries of art. Indeed, as AI impacts contemporary art practices and visual culture, technologies are deeply transforming the way images are taken, edited, spread, and seen.

With time capsules designed as cabinets of curiosities, the present and the past are linked together to place current transformations in a historical perspective. They cover topics such as the history of devices for automating calculation and production, the relationship between today’s computer vision systems and past attempts to automate visual perception, the origins of systems for recognizing emotions, and the genealogy of prompts. These showcases offer genealogical incursions, allowing us to place contemporary phenomena within a broader cultural, artistic and scientific history.

While artificial intelligence has infused every stratum of culture and society since the late 2000s, this exhibition offers an opportunity to question the increasing influence of AI in our lives while exploring the upheavals through different artistic medium and outlooks.
