ANRI SALA / THE FRENCH PAVILION AT VENICE BIENNALE

By Crash redaction

The Albanian-born, Paris-based video artist Anri Sala represents France at the French Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale. The artist renowned for his interest in the idea of repetition pursues the exploration of his favorite theme with Ravel Ravel Unravel (2013).

The installation is about how sameness and difference are being produced. The artwork shows two celebrated concert pianists filmed separately performing Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The films, played simultaneously, point out differences between the two interpretations of the music.

Last, another film Unravel shows a DJ mixing the two interpretations. It happens to be quite a struggle to reconcile the two unsynchronized interpretations… To be discovered at the German pavilon since, this year, France and Germany are swapping pavilions. From 1st June  to 24th November 2013.
