AN INTERVIEW WITH HONEY DIJON

By Roisin Breen

HONEY FUCKING DIJON is the creative outlet of the namesake DJ, musician and producer, Honey Dijon. Lending her design flair and creative edge to another Chicago-born icon, Scholl, the grammy-winning artist has created a collection based on a shared love of the extravagant and liberating silhouettes of the 1970’s.

For the season, the capsule introduced two new models – reinterpreting the legendary Scholl Pescura silhouette. The Pescura Starlight flat is a punky sandal boldly brandishing metal studs and a sleek varnished sole, with a leather strap coming in every shade from moody Burgundy to bright summer white. The Pescura Twilo is slightly more delicate in form, tapering slightly at the toe, but adding elevation on a rounded three inch heel, coming in outlandish glassy red to a deep moody blue. The collection is available in a range of sizes from 35 to 46. It is available on the Scholl’s website and in selected department stores.

The accompanying campaign is photographed by Davit Giorgadze, styled by Christian Stemmler under the creative direction and modelling of Honey Dijon herself. Here the iconic DJ sat down with Crash to tell us about her creative process, and lend us some listening hours with her some of her ultimate tracks.

FIRST OF ALL, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU BECAME INVOLVED WITH THIS PROJECT WITH SCHOLL?

I love the history of the brand. My mom used to wear Scholl. It’s originally from Chicago, so it felt like the universe was calling again when they approached me.

YOU BOTH HAIL FROM CHICAGO ORIGINALLY… WHAT DOES THE CITY MEAN TO YOU?

It’s home. It’s my place to go and reset.

HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE DESIGN PROCESS? WERE YOU GIVEN A BRIEF AND WHAT WERE YOUR INSPIRATIONS?

I like to delve into the archives on design projects like this, to see if there are any elements that can be re-imagined and remixed. It’s always my favourite part of the process. I didn’t want to change the product completely, as it is so iconic. I like to remix things, adding some chicness to the situation. Something you can wear to club but also during the day.

YOUR DESIGNS WERE INSPIRED BY THE 70S… WHAT DOES THE ERA MEAN TO YOU?

It was a chic time!

ARE YOU A SHOE OBSESSIVE?

Of course I am !!!! Obviously I don’t have only one type but it goes from high heels to sneakers. When it comes to my work, DJing is performing. I need something that allows me to do that job 1000%. So when I’m performing it’s not about what I’m wearing – it’s about what I’m playing.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT OF A SET WHEN YOU’RE PERFORMING?

That’s a tough question – every set is different – sometimes you need to read the situation and bring things onto your level, to change the dynamics of the crowd. Sometimes the crowd is ready and you have to give it from the get go. So every set you can have a different favourite moment, it might be the synergy from a dancer and the music and the lighting – these things are natural and organic.

YOUR SET AT SUGAR MOUNTAIN IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC SETS OF ALL TIME! BUT YOU HAVE SINCE GONE ON TO PERFORM COUNTLESS EPIC SETS, FESTIVAL STAGES, BOILER ROOMS, CLUBS. WHICH ONE STANDS OUT TO YOU THE MOST? AND WHAT’S THE BEST SET YOU’VE EVER PLAYED?

There are so many special moments in the year – and I appreciate them all in different ways. Sometimes it’s the scale of the event like Homobloc but equally a set a small sweaty basement club is just as rewarding.

I honestly can’t tell you THE BEST set I’ve ever played – somehow I feel like it’s not for me to decide on that. Boiler Room was a moment – but it didn’t feel like that at the time !!!!

WHAT UP AND COMING ARTISTS DO YOU HAVE YOUR EYE ON RIGHT NOW?

All the girls coming through – TSHA, Suze Ijo & Dee Diggs!

AND NOW QUICK FIRE, CAN YOU TELL US SOME OF YOUR TOP TRACKS…

Top song for the metro? Honey Dijon ft Eve / In The Club

A pre-party? The Clash / Magnificent 7

A dinner party? Rufus & Chaka Khan Live in Me

The beach? Isolée Beau Mot Plage

An after-party? Octave One Blackwater
