ISSEY MIYAKE FW/22

By Roisin Breen

The Issey Miyake Fall/Winter 2022/23 collection, Sow It and Let It Grow, is inspired by the wild nature of plants and the beauty of their forms. It’s an exploration of the evolution of a seed that germinates, develops its roots and shoots before leaving the ground to go towards the light. The collection’s concept echoes the liveliness of untamed plants and is characterized by irregular silhouettes, bright and bold use of color and a variety of textures in the fabrics used.

Rhizome is a seamless mesh series that embodies the theme of the collection by drawing inspiration from the roots and stems that extend and grow freely in all directions. These wool garments have a light and airy finish. They have many openings to be worn in different ways. Inspired by the shape of the roots, parts of the garment hang freely and can be wrapped around the waist or neck, to create different styles.

The video and visuals were made by London artist, photographer and videographer Marcus Tomlinson. He combines the worlds of art and fashion with his unique and carefully designed style. His creative vision is internationally recognized and he has been a longtime collaborator of the brand, working previously on the campaigns for the A-POC collection and Issey Water.

“For ‘Rhizome’, we developed a story around dancers gathered in a forest. Initially sleeping, they wake up and disappear, seeming to forget one of the dancers – a rhizome – who finds herself alone. While the other dancers are together in the forest, the forgotten rhizome reminds them – she needs them to fully regain her nature,” said Tomlinson.

The series is now available in stores.
