MAME KUROGOUCHI SS24

By Roisin Breen

Mame Kurogouchi’s 2024 Spring Summer Collection pays homage to the rich history of Japanese porcelain, taking inspiration from Arita town’s Early Imari pottery legacy. Designer Maiko Kurogouchi celebrates the evolution of this craft, influenced by continental techniques and revived by contemporary artists like Ryohei Yamamoto, Yuki Hirakura, and Mayumi Hamano.

The collection channels the pursuit of porcelain perfection, showcasing a fresh and emotional palette of whites, ecru, and mint green. Translucent glaze-like lamé jersey pieces elegantly drape the body, while unevenly dyed jacquard patterns and asymmetrical hand-tie dyed dresses evoke the enchanting landscapes of glazed porcelain.

Rich textures inspired by the ‘Yokoku’ technique add depth and character to denim pants, jackets, silk cotton dresses, and shirts. The collection breathes life into the landscapes depicted on Early-Imari porcelain, infusing them with nostalgia and bridging the past and present.

Intricate handwork on asymmetrical knit camisoles and vests mirrors the elegance of broken porcelain fragments, preserving the memories of yesteryears. The collection’s porcelain buttons, crafted in collaboration with artist Mayumi Hamano and personally shaped by Maiko Kurogouchi in Arita Town’s kiln, add an authentic touch.

In summary, Mame Kurogouchi’s 2024 Spring Summer Collection is a captivating blend of history and contemporary fashion. It pays homage to Japanese porcelain’s legacy while delivering a fresh, emotionally charged style that captivates the senses.
