NO PACK IS THE NEW PACK BY BOUCHERON

By Martina Conte

Boucheron, a name synonymous with timeless elegance and innovation, has long been a pioneer in the world of luxury jewelry. Since its founding in 1858, this esteemed Maison has continually pushed the boundaries of creativity, setting benchmarks for the entire industry. From the first jeweler to engrave diamonds, to redefining jewelry conventions by eliminating clasps, Boucheron has consistently dared to be different. Yet, their latest venture, which ushers in a new era for the brand, transcends the boundaries of their own past innovations. In 2023, Boucheron unveiled a groundbreaking project that reimagines the very essence of luxury packaging, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to sustainability and their determination to lead the industry towards a greener future.

At the heart of this transformation is Hélène Poulit-Duquesne, CEO of Boucheron. Recognizing the urgent need for sustainability in the luxury industry, she set forth to challenge the status quo. The traditional Boucheron packaging, once an emblem of luxury, had become an environmental liability. In a time when sustainable development is paramount, Boucheron’s ‘Precious for the Future’ strategy demanded a radical shift in how the brand presented its creations to the world. The process began in 2021, as CEO Poulit-Duquesne called upon her teams to deconstruct and rebuild the case from scratch. The conventional jewelry case, heavy, bulky, available in numerous formats, composed of an array of materials, and notoriously non-recyclable, was no longer viable. Boucheron’s team embarked on a journey of innovation and creativity to redefine the case’s environmental footprint. From the initial twelve formats, only seven were retained. All eleven materials used in the old packaging were discarded in favor of two natural and recyclable materials: aluminum and wool felt.

One of the most groundbreaking aspects of this project is the use of aluminum in jewelry packaging. Known for its lightness, aesthetics, and durability, aluminum is a material more commonly associated with aerospace and high-end luggage. However, its most vital characteristic is that it is a natural and infinitely recyclable material, aligning perfectly with Boucheron’s vision of sustainability. The choice of wool felt, enveloping the creations, was equally significant. Felt requires no glue or stitching, which facilitates the recycling process. This soft and resilient natural material not only protects Boucheron’s creations but also enhances them with its exquisite emerald green color. In their commitment to sustainability, Boucheron selected wool certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). The innovation extends to the very design of the case itself. Departing from the traditional clasp system, which relied on multiple non-recyclable metal pieces, Boucheron has simplified and reimagined the case’s opening with a lid. This bold move is in harmony with the brand’s commitment to eco-consciousness and sets new standards for sustainability in the industry.

As with all Boucheron creations, aesthetics play a pivotal role in the new packaging. Hélène Poulit-Duquesne gave the design team carte blanche to create a collection of seven boxes meant to be more than mere containers; they are objects of art. Unlike traditional jewelry cases, these new containers are designed to be displayed and collected, serving as tangible symbols of Boucheron’s dedication to sustainability. Drawing inspiration from their archives, the design features finely sculpted emerald-sized meshes, a subtle nod to the iconic Place Vendôme, a beloved symbol of the Maison. Boucheron’s commitment to sustainability is not limited to packaging. Even the traditional gift wrapping has been reimagined. A green pouch, made from 65% recycled material and certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), now replaces the conventional wrapping. This pouch serves a dual purpose, functioning as a travel bag as well.
