OFF WHITE SS23

By Roisin Breen

Following its Fall/Winter 2023 runway show, Off-White has released its Spring/Summer 2023 advertising campaign. Conceived by Fashion Editor and Stylist Ibrahim Kamara (Off-White’s Art & Image Director) and shot by Thibaut Grevet, it is rooted in the conceptual threads that directed the SS23 show “Celebration”. In collaboration with Set Designer Ibby Njoya and Movement Director Nicolas Huchard, the creative team envisaged a campaign which served as both a celebration of life and of new beginnings, weaving together essential aspects of Virgil Abloh’s design legacy — Impossible Blue, Community, Balance, Work in Progress, Seamless, and Meteor — into future-forward creations.

Dressed in the season’s defining garments, pieces visibly under construction in a tonal and uniform palette, models move in measured gestures pursued with balance and delicacy — a purposeful strength, rather than pure dynamism. Classic black suits and blue knitted two-pieces offer a trompe l’oeil update, with white stitching, reminiscent of tailor’s chalk, detailing the muscles, organs, and bone structure of the body that lies beneath them.

Since 2013, Off-White has aimed to define the grey area between black and white as a color. Presenting seasonal men’s and women’s clothing collections, objects, furniture, and publications Off-White is more than just a clothing label, it’s the articulation of the current cultural vision. Collections are embedded in a recurrent backstory in the design studio based in Milan, Italy. The label harnesses the country’s history and craftsmanship, yet offers a global perspective on design and trends.

Echoing the philosophies of its late Creative Director and Designer, Virgil Abloh, the SS23 campaign splices the reality of how clothes are worn with the artistic expression of high-fashion, exploring concepts in the realm of youth culture in the contemporary context.

A Spring/Summer take on the classic Katoka and Volcanite eyewear designs come in sculptural, enveloping, chrome shades that juxtapose metallic and matte surfaces. And the iconic Off-White “Spring Heel” is given an update in three new seasonal styles: mule sandal, bootie, and high boot — all with nappa and craquelé calf leather uppers.
