PRADA FRAMES 2023 – MATERIALS IN FLUX

By Crash redaction

Prada presents the Prada Frames 2023 symposium, which explores the complex interaction between design and the environment. The event is curated by Formafantasma, a well-known research and design studio based in Milan and Rotterdam.

Prada Frames this year will be based in Hong Kong and Milan. The theme, « ‘Materials in Flux, » examines the relationship between waste and matter in transformation. Starting from the concepts of British anthropologist Tim Ingold, it shows how materials are real living entities that are interconnected and constantly evolving and changing. The symposium will focus on investigating the dynamics that coexist in  timber infrastructure by revealing the relationship between matter and ecosystems.

The event  will take place on March 21st and 22nd, at M+ in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture. During the first day, M+ will present an opening lecture by architect Jacques Herzog about the museum’s building. On March 22nd, local and international speakers including Ute Meta Bauer, LAAB Architects, Lisa Reihana, Charles Lim and Formafantasma will be brought together to speak specifically on the theme of « Materials in Flux. »

The Italian event, curated by Formafantasma, will then be held in Milan on April 17th, 18th and 19th, as part of the Salone del Mobile, and will include contributions from Tim Ingold, Elizabeth Povinelli, Beatriz Colomina, Mark Wigley, Sophie Chao, Veena Sahajwalla and Hans Ulrich Obrist. The variety of scholars and practitioners from various fields leads to a transdisciplinary journey with a focus on the environment.

The resulting collective reflection is a more focused attention toward the potential of design and science as agents of environmental change.
