SANDRO X LOUIS BARTHÉLEMY

By Roisin Breen

SANDRO has invited French artist and designer Louis Barthélemy to illustrate his universe in a capsule collection alongside Évelyne Chetrite, the brands’ Founder and Artistic Director.

As an artist who divides his time between Paris, Egypt and Morocco, Louis Barthélemy places a deep commitment to the preservation and revival of traditional crafts at the heart of his practice. A shared love for Morocco and an intimate attachment to its crafts unite the two artists.

Évelyne Chetrite grew up in Rabat, Morocco and she holds dear to her heart the memories of her grandfather, a shirt tailor, and the abundance of colors of daily life from her childhood. Évelyne wanted a collection in the spirit of a modern fresco and Louis imagined vivid graphics inspired by scenes of Moroccan life. He was particularly inspired by the artist Mohamed Ben Ali R’bati, who is highly considered to be the first modern painter of Morocco. These graphics come to life on fluid materials, silk for shirts, tee-shirts and scarves, or polyester for shorts and pants.

In addition, a bucket bag made of natural straw and leather is a reminder of SANDRO and Louis Barthélemy’s commitment to craftsmanship. This bag is entirely made by the DOUM FOR WOMEN cooperative which is part of a goal to empower women in rural communities in Morocco and to safeguard an ancestral know-how, basketry. By preserving traditions in a modern way and sharing their craft with the world, these women become autonomous and financially independent.
