THE FIVE BEST LOOKS FROM THE OSCARS

By Alice Butterlin

The 2019 Oscars ceremony happened yesterday and rewarded Bohemian Rhapsody with four prizes, including one for best actor given to the rising star Rami Malek. Olivia Colman was crowned best actress and Spike Lee was awarded the prize of best adapted screenplay. Amidst the ceremony, the Oscars is also the occasion for the guests to dress up and pose in designer gowns. Who was the best dressed this year? Who stole the show? Most importantly, who stood out from the crowd and made a fashion statement? We’ve selected the five stars we thought made an impact on the red carpet.

JENNIFER LOPEZ

The singer and actor walked out in a disco ball dress made by Tom Ford. The stand-out gown was made of gold embroidered broken mirror pieces, reflecting the flashlights of the paparazzi. Once again, the pop star shows she masters the art of Oscars glamour, topping off the look with a classic hollywood hair-do. She almost looked like a life-size Oscars statue.

TESSA THOMPSON

Following the tragic news of Karl Lagerfeld’s death last week, actress Tessa Thompson chose to pay homage to the late designer with a Chanel Haute Couture gown. The dress was a black tube style with ruffles in the middle and the end, and gold sequin accents making it red-carpet appropriate. A very subtle look that Thompson accompanied with gold eye-shadow and jewellery.

GEMMA CHAN

Actress Gemma Chan wowed the Oscars with an eye-popping bright pink dress by Valentino Haute Couture. The huge gown was ruched at the top and hugged the torso and then flared out to the ground. The design felt fresh and modern, giving the Crazy Rich Asians star a real glow. She wore the dress with simple pulled-back hair held with quirky rhinestone barrettes.

EMMA STONE

The actress, who attended the Oscars following her outstanding performance in the film The Favourite, wore a fantastic Louis Vuitton dress that looked like honeycombe in gold and brown sequins. The exaggerated shoulders and figure-hugging form gave the gown a bit of a sci-fi silhouette to Emma Stone, who is an ambassador for the house. She kept the accessories very minimal with small earrings and a soft make-up.

NICHOLAS HOULT

Another actor of The Favourite, Nicholas Hoult, walked the Oscars’ red carpet in an all-black ultra sleek Dior Homme costume. The costume had the particularity of featuring triple breasted silk lapels, an original touch that took the otherwise classic look to the next level. He attended the event with his costar Joe Alwyn, dressed in Tom Ford.
