BACKSTAGE AT FENG CHEN WANG MEN’S SS24 SHOW

By ELISE TOÏDÉ

Feng Chen Wang’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection is inspired by her grandmother’s childhood memories: accompanying her on walks through the mountains and along the meandering rivers of her hometown in Fujian, China. Wang wanted to celebrate these memories by recreating them with an ancient method of botanical contact printing. Working with local Chinese artisans, Wang selected some of her grandmother’s favorite plants, such as onions, walnuts, eucalyptus, and apple leaves, and printed them on traditional Chinese silk; the colors, shape, and grain of each plant were clearly imprinted on the fabric.

Each plant is like a reminder of life, each expressing exuberance and tenacity for life, each recalling the passage of tradition. Hence, this season, new patterns unique to Feng Chen Wang emerge. They transcend time and space, almost like a conversation with the past to preserve a love so pure that it never dies.

Silk is the fabric through which Wang wanted to express this concept; silk is a noble, light and soft material.
A perfect material to express these kinds of concepts that hark back to the designer’s childhood and her most intimate memories.
For the fashion show, held at the Lycée Montaigne, the musical collective Nara Bara performed live as the models walked down the runway, mixing harmonies and intricate rhythms of jazz.
