DARA BIRNBAUM EXHIBITION AT FONDAZIONE PRADA

By Crash redaction

From April 13 to September 25, Fondazione Prada presents an extensive exhibition dedicated to the artwork of Dara Birnbaum at the Osservatorio venue in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. Another version of the project will be held at Prada Aoyama Tokyo from June 1 to August 28, 2023.

Osservatorio is the Fondazione Prada space most dedicated to the experimentation of different visual languages and especially to the relationship and interaction that art has with technology and its various cultural expressions.
The exhibition, curated by Barbara London with Valentino Catricalà and Eva Fabbris, focuses on Birnbaum’s different perspectives and paths.

Dara Birnbaum is an artist who has continuously challenged the classical canons of art and mass media. The exhibition includes video works, audio, multi-channel installations, photographs and 3D prints on Plexiglas, all made between 1975 and 2022.
« Dara Birnbaum » reveals how the artist has devoted deep time to studying and researching the various cultural intersections between video art, television and consumer technologies, and, one may add among other themes, gender bias in the representation of women in popular culture.
Conceived by the artist for the two floors of the Observatory, the exhibition itinerary does not follow a chronological order, but reveals the multiplicity of artistic media and languages employed by Birnbaum and, through a careful selection of works, explores recurring themes in her artistic practice.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication in the Quaderni series, published by Fondazione Prada. It includes an essay by curator Barbara London and a conversation between Dara Birnbaum and the two associate curators Valentino Catricalà and Eva Fabbris.
« Dara Birnbaum » is the result of a collaboration focused on educational activities with the School of Digital Arts (SODA) in Manchester, UK.
