GRETA GERWIG TO CHAIR JURY AT 77TH CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

 American actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, , will chair the Jury of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to take place from May 14th to May 25th, 2024.

Gerwig, primarily recognized for her involvement in the mumblecore cinematic movement, first gained prominence in 2010 with the role of Florence Marr in the independent feature film « Greenberg, » directed by Noah Baumbach. Since her debut as an actress, Gerwig has emerged as a multifaceted talent, actively engaged not only in acting but also in screenwriting and directing.

Her foray into screenwriting began with works like « Hannah Takes the Stairs » in 2007 and « Nights and Weekends » in 2008, which she co-directed. However, it was in 2018 that Gerwig truly made her mark as a filmmaker, winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy with her very first solo film as a director, « Lady Bird. »The film was widespread acclaim and earned Gerwig five Academy Award nominations at the Oscar, including Best Director.

In 2023, Gerwig shattered records with the film « Barbie, » starring Margot Robbie alongside Ryan Gosling. The movie soared to unprecedented heights, becoming the first film directed by a woman to reach a billion dollars at the global box office.

As the first American female filmmaker to preside over the Cannes Film Festival Jury, Greta Gerwig, continues to redefine boundaries and set new benchmarks in the world of cinema. Her appointment adds another milestone to her illustrious career, as she becomes the youngest personality to assume this prestigious role since Sofia Loren, in 1966. Additionally, Gerwig follows in the footsteps of Olivia de Haviland, the first American woman to serve as President of the Cannes Jury in 1965.
