LAGOS SPACE PROGRAMME PRESENTS ‘CLOTH AS A QUEER ARCHIVE’

By Martina Conte

Presented as part of the Lagos Space Program, Adeju Thompson will present her eighth collection entitled « Cloth as a Queer Archive. » Thompson’s « Project 8 » collection explores Yoruba textile culture in the context of queer adornment practices, highlighting the decorative and protective function of clothing.

The designer for this collection focused on the aesthetic and spiritual importance of body adornment and decoration in Yoruba culture; Thompson then focused on the art of Adire, a resistance dyeing technique used to create indigo-dyed textiles by the Yoruba women of southwestern Nigeria. In this technique, the artist uses the medium as a means of storytelling, creating parallels with modern subcultures in which queer communities share their stories through languages, symbols, and gestures specific to their groups.

About Adeju Thompson
Adeju Thompson founded the Lagos Space Program in 2018. The foundation of the designer’s creative work lies in sustainability and cultural preservation. As a queer individual, Thompson uses the processes of creating his collections as a way to understand who he is in a deeper way.
